preparing to build a custom home

am I ready to build right now?

Are you comfortable making hundreds of decisions throughout a complex process? Does your schedule allow for regular, often weekly, meetings at the build site? Is your current family dynamic prepared to handle the additional stress of designing and constructing a custom home over the next 18 to 24 months? How well do you manage unexpected challenges or setbacks? Are you collaborative and open to working closely with a builder? Do you have a clear and realistic understanding of what your budget can achieve?

If you can confidently answer "yes" to most of these questions, then you’re well-positioned to take on the rewarding journey of building a custom home. It’s a process filled with creativity, collaboration, and meaningful milestones—one that can lead to a home perfectly tailored to your lifestyle and vision. With the right mindset and team, it can truly be one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.

If you're feeling unsure about several of these areas that’s completely okay. Together we can assess where you stand and explore what steps you need to take to prepare yourself to build your dream home.

Picking the "Right" Lot

Choosing the wrong lot can lead to costly setbacks—whether it’s unexpected utility expenses, tricky topography that drives up foundation costs, or limitations that compromise your vision for your outdoor space. That’s why I personally review potential lots with my clients before they commit. Together, we’ll make sure the land you choose supports your dream home and avoids the common pitfalls that can derail a project early on.

Picking the "right" builder

Choosing the right builder is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in the custom home process—and if you choose to work with me, I want you to feel confident you’ve made the right decision. I take the time to get to know you, your family, your vision, and your values from the very beginning, because we’ll be working closely together for the next 24 to 36 months. My goal is to make that experience as smooth, collaborative, and enjoyable as possible.

One thing I always discuss with my clients is how we can include the whole family in the journey. Building a custom home is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—not just for you, but for your kids, too. While some meetings may not be ideal for little ones, I’m always happy to welcome your family on site when it’s safe and appropriate. I believe in making this process meaningful for everyone involved.

I also encourage you to speak with my past clients. Ask them about their experience—Was the process well organized? Did they feel supported? Did I follow through on what I promised? Most importantly, would they choose to build with me again? I take pride in not only building your home, but in creating a relationship you’ll value for years to come.

Picking the "right" Designer

There’s a reason the builder should come before the designer in the custom home process—your builder plays a critical role in aligning your design vision with your overall budget. While both the builder and designer collaborate to bring your dream home to life, I’m the one with a clear understanding of the full financial scope of the project. My input helps ensure your design choices are not only beautiful but also practical and within budget.

Just as choosing the right builder is essential, selecting the right designer is just as important. I’ve built strong relationships with a range of talented designers and decorators, each with their own strengths and styles. If you don't already have a trusted decorator in mind, I’ll personally help connect you with someone who truly understands your vision, respects your taste, and complements your personality. This isn't about chasing trends—it’s about creating a home that feels like yours. Your style and priorities will lead the way, and I’ll help you find the perfect design partner to bring them to life.

Have a realistic budget

The cost of building a custom home can vary widely, and part of my role as your builder is to help you navigate those numbers with clarity and confidence. If you’re in the fortunate position to pursue a custom build, it’s important to understand that a truly personalized home requires a meaningful investment—not just financially, but in thoughtful planning.

I’ll walk you through what’s possible within your budget and help you weigh the trade-offs between upfront cost and long-term value. It’s natural to compare estimates from multiple builders, but it’s worth asking: Are you looking for the lowest bid, even if it means cutting corners on quality or service? Or would you rather prioritize craftsmanship and reliability, even if that means refining your wish list a bit?

Your budget will shape the direction of the project, and I’ll help ensure your vision aligns with what you’re comfortable investing. With clear expectations and honest conversations up front, we can build something you’ll love—without unnecessary surprises along the way.

Have a realistic mindset

When building a custom home, it’s easy to associate “custom” with “perfect”—but the reality is, perfection doesn’t exist. Every part of the process—materials, labor, and people—comes with its own set of imperfections. My job as your builder is to bring all those moving parts together and guide them toward creating a home you’ll be proud to call your own.

I’m personally involved in every step of the journey, and I believe that open, honest communication is the foundation for a successful build. If something’s on your mind, I want to hear it—because unspoken concerns can’t be addressed. You’re never bothering me by asking questions or sharing feedback; in fact, I welcome it, and desire it for my own personal growth as a builder.

Yes, there will be challenges. That’s just part of building something from the ground up. But when you work with me, you’ll have someone who’s not just managing the project, but fully invested in your experience. I’ll be there to navigate the bumps, keep things on track, and make sure we stay true to your vision, your timeline, and your budget.

be excited and positive

Building a custom home is a complex journey, but with the right preparation—and the right builder by your side—it can be one of the most exciting and rewarding journeys you'll ever take. As your builder, I’m here to help you prepare early: mentally, financially, and logistically, so the process feels clear, intentional, and enjoyable from day one. For many people, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and my goal is to make sure it’s not just about the finished home, but about creating a positive, memorable experience every step of the way.
